The Easter Experience - April 29th to May 3rd 2019
The journey round St James began with a whistle-stop tour of other journeys Jesus made during his life, recapping the Christmas stories we had shared with the same group of children in December 2018. The children then followed a trail of footsteps to 4 different ‘stations’ to hear about the first Easter journeys, and take part in discussion and activities.
The visits to the garden on Easter morning, where hearing about Mary’s sadness helped some children talk about people they loved who had died. It also led to a very strange conversation about kissing pigs!! Everyone took home a wristband to remind them how people in the story felt.
The fishing trip that ended in breakfast with Jesus gave everyone a chance to go fishing for themselves, and led to some fierce competition.
An Idea is Born
The whole visit ended in an explanation of why the fish symbol has always been important to Christians, a hunt for fishes in and around St James, and a prayer.
On the journey to Emmaus, there were maps and a scroll to look at, lots of lively discussion and ‘bread rolls’ which broke open to reveal Jesus’s name.
The spiritual journey from the Resurrection to Pentecost, via Ascension led to exploring the mystery and joy of 40 exciting days in history, translating ‘Hello’ from different languages, and thinking about what we would want to leave our best friends, if we had to go away, so they would remember us always?
